The NBA off season has been wild so far. First, the rumors swirling around possible Paul George and Jimmy Butler trades. Then, the firing of Cavs GM David Griffin. And now…the Knicks are taking calls about shipping Porzingis. The NBA just became my new favorite reality TV show.
It hurts the brain to think about why Phil Jackson would even generate the thought of moving Porzingis. The dude is a franchise player. Build around him and things could eventually look brighter for the city of New York. It just seems unthinkable. Unless the Knicks get an offer that blows them out of the water, you gotta hold on to this guy.
The sudden rumors of Zinger being shipped might stem from the fact that Kristaps reportedly hasn’t spoken to any of the Knicks front office since he skipped his exit meeting at the end of last season. It’s probably just Phil’s way of saying “you aren’t untouchable man.”
But you can’t blame Porzingis for being slightly frustrated. He’s watching Phil treat Carmelo like the girlfriend who thinks the two of you are the most perfect couple, while you keep doing everything you can to get her to break up with you. Talk about messy. (S)He wants a long lasting relationship, consisting of settling down and eventually having some kids, but Phil realllllllly thinks it’s time to move on. Kristaps is just that one friend that defends that pestering girl friend through everything. Carmelo’s his day one, and its understandable why he’d be upset.
Porzingis probably doesn’t want to be treated that way either. But Phil’s letting him know that he’s testing his limits. It’s a messy situation that the Knicks definitely need to sort out, preferably before draft day.
The only issue is that the Knicks definitely need Porzingis more than he needs the Knicks. So the answer is yes, the Knicks are crazy. Porzingis will play and thrive well anywhere he goes. The Knicks on the other hand, will most likely be left with a draft pick or two (which is always risky) and/or some washed up players. It does sound like a Phil Jackson type move to make however, right?
